Manuscript sheet, 5” x8,” irregular edges, else very good. Ink manuscript, “Number of prisoners who died at Salisbury NC from October 8th, 1864 to February 22nd 1864. Averaging twenty seven per day, Total number three thousand, seven hundred and eighty.” It continues with five columns, one for each month, then lists the deaths by date. Salisbury Prison was the only Confederate Prison located in North Carolina, located in Salisbury, on 16 acres purchased by the Confederate Government November 2, 1861. The prison consisted of an old cotton factory building measuring 90 x 50 feet, six brick tenements, a large house, a smith shop and a few other small buildings. By October 1864 the prison population reached 10,000.
