Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, “R.P. Chew” Major of Chew’s Battery, 3p. quarto, Headquarters Horse Artillery, November 16, 1864, addressed to Captain Pendleton A.A.Genl Arty, and reads in part: “...I have the honor to submit the following outline of the operations of the Horse Artillery from the 4th May 1864 to the 31st Aug. 1864...Genl. Rosser was engaged with the Enemy about a mile from this place. The nature of the country precluding the use of a large number of guns. I left Maj. Breathed with instructions to put the Battalion in position...the Enemy retiring at the time, the section was rapidly advanced and keeping on the line of skirmishers engaged in a running fight for two miles. The enemy diverging from the road formed on a hill to our left and opened a destructive fire...At 4 PM an attack was made by the infantry on the rear of enemy - forcing them back upon the line...The batteries followed a pursuit with the cavly but were not engaged...” Silked, else Good.
