A war-date Confederate letter, 1p. 4to., written in ink by a certain J. B. Roysten, Richmond, [Va.], Jan. 25, 1864 to Sec. of War Seddon for a passport allowing a mother to take her son s to Ireland, in part: "Mrs. Margaret Finney the bearer of this desires to return to her native country with her son Nicholas Finney. I have known Mrs. Finney for five years past and esteem her a worthy and reliable woman, her son came to this city in November 1860, having myself procured him a transportation ticket in New York, which I forwarded to him at Galway, Ireland, he has since then been residing in Richmond and has conducted himself with property. Mrs. Finney is now quite advanced in age, and represents herself as in needy circumstances, she desires to retain the services of her only son, and return with him to her native country, I consider her worthy of consideration…." With testimony by three men stating that "J.B. Royster…is a native citizen of Richmond - we have no doubt of the correctness of the above statement…" with integral statement by the British consulate stating that "Mr. Nicholas Finney a native of Ireland is a subject of her Brittanic Majesty who has never forfeited his claim to the protection of the Queen by becoming a subject or a citizen of any Foreign State…". Fine.
