Rare Confederate Engineer Letter Signed, “A.L. Rives” as Lt. Col. & Actg. Chf. of Bur., 1-1/2p. quarto, on fine “Confederate States of America. War Department Engineer Bureau, Richmond, Va.” lettersheet, January 18, 1864, addressed to Captain L.P. Grant, Corps of Engineers P.A.C.S., at Atlanta, Georgia, and reads in part: “..I think your best plant to settle the transfer of $50,000 to Major Nocquet, is to obtain all the certificates bearing on the question that you can & inclose them in the account current & furnish your representation in Congress with duplicates to support a bill for your relief. I can see no other way of arranging the matter. The Auditor says if Mr. Maxwell’s agent has been transacting his business his receipt will have to be taken until Mr. M is released. It would be well to get certificates that he is confined & that his present agent has been & is in his service....” Fine.
