War-date printed letter, 1p. quarto, State of Virginia, Executive Department, Richmond, January 14, 1865, addressed to the Clerk of the Hastings Court, and reads in part: “...In answer to the requisition for slaves to work on fortifications, made by the governor on the 16th ultimo, many of the counties having shown that proper credit has not been given for labor heretofore furnished, and that large losses have been sustained by the abstraction of slaves by the enemy, and by the absconding of the slaves from the counties, the governor has determined to modify the requisition. He has therefore established the following rule: That the requisition be so modified that, in lieu of the number of slaves heretofore called for, each county shall furnish one in ten of the whole male slave working population of the county between the ages specified in the law, and that the court ascertain the number so called for as soon as possible, and forward them with all dispatch, making report thereof to the governor...” Celaphane tape repair, else Good.
