Pamphlet “Hampton and Reconstruction” by Edward L. Wells, Author of ‘Hampton and His Cavalry in ‘64’, Columbia, South Carolina, 1907, 8p. octavo, and begins “The era of Reconstruction is, in many respects, the most interesting period in the history of the South. It was not, of course, a fruitful formative epoch, and it did not produce much of general value to the country; but its effect upon the development of the character of the people of the States most affected and most afflicted by it could hardly be over-estimated. Its trials served to deepen and strengthen the people’s love of the State, and to develop the character of the citizen in patience, endurance, and public spirit. It was, also, the darkest era in the life of the States...Mr Wells’s book is not limited to Reconstruction, as its title ‘Hampton and Reconstruction,’ fully indicates; but it deals with the most interesting and important aspect of taht period, the lofty role played in it and in the redemption of teh State from carpet-bag and scalawag oppression, by Gen. Wade Hampton...” Illustrated. Fine.Edward L. Wells served with the 4th South Carolina Infantry and was Wouned in Action at Trevillian Station.
