A great good-old-day's T. L. S. 1p. 4to., by a certain "Henrietta C[?]", on The News Leader stationery, Richmond, Va., Jan. 28, 1932 to a certain Mrs. J. Y. McFall concerning the value of Lee's autograph during the Depression, reading, in part: "…Dr. Beverly Tucker has sent me your letter concerning your Lee autograph…Dr. [Douglas S.] Freeman says that this is a very unfavorable time to try to sell a Lee letter…the autograph market is prostrated and letters are not bringing a fourth of what they were bring a few years ago. A good Lee letter can now be had for $50.00…at the peak…they often brought $200.00…a military letter covering a matter of historic importance would sell much better than a personal letter…". Very good.
