Autograph Letter Signed by Tim Lynch, 4p. quarto, April 18, 1861, with two small American flags drawn at top, it reads in part: “...We are in the midst of an awful excitement, business is almost entirely suspended, the streets are in a state of commotion from morning to night. Flags are flying from stores, dwellings, public buildings, and buildings of all kinds. We have got one flying out of our third story window. The streets are filled with people discussing the state of the country or rushing wildly about to hear the latest news. Every once in a while I hear the sound of the drum & fife followed by crowds of men marching about the streets collecting recruits for the war. Such is the state of feeling that thousands of men are, turned away from the recruiting stations, as there cannot be found room, for them in the ranks. It was quite unnecessary for you to ask whether we were true to the Union, and the enforcement of the laws. You forget we favor the Union party whose motto & platform is ‘The Constitution, the Union & the Enforcement of Laws...’...” More. Good.
