A good early Kentuckian home front letter, 3pp. 4to., written in ink by a man who worked for Abbott Johnson & Co., Philadelphia, May 27, 1861 with excellent Union flag cover and octagonal date stamp, in small part: "...Why a man should refuse to pay an honest debt for political reasons, we cannot understand...for the honor of Kentucky we have, as yet, had no one there [to] take this ground…could [we] say as much of your neighbor, Tennnessee. We are glad to see that your noble state refuses to be delivered tied hand & foot into the embraces of Jeff. Davis & Co. I think [the US] Government will refrain as long as possible from putting Federal troops on the soil of Ky. but when such a course becomes necessary we do not think any good citizen should object...".
