A good early 1861 letter written in ink by John A. Hite, 3p. 8vo., Richland Rush Co. Ind. February 26, 1861, and reads in part: "...there seems to be a good deal of interest here taken in regard to calling out the militia to redress wrongs committed by the South. This I am opposed to for several reasons. I am opposed to a domestic quarrel and am opposed to hostilities against old friends kindred and acquaintances. How would it appear for you and I to meet opposed in the ranks because you was born on one side of the Ohio river and I on the other, it is revolting to cruelty and shocking to humanity. For these reasons I will under no considerations enlist not because of my cowardice but because of my feelings towards humanity. However I am in hopes that militia will not be called out but that our national troubles may be peacefully and amicably adjusted...". Fine
