Archive of retained lawyer's copies from a case pertaining to pistols shipped by Ira Thompson from New York on June 14, 1861, by order of J.L. Moore of Louisville, Kentucky and directed by him to be sent to the care of W.A. Steele, Jefferson, Maryland, 11p. folio. This shipment was subsequently seized by the surveyor of New Albany as contraband of war and sent to the Governor of Indiana. They were then distributed to the soldiers of that state. First document lists all the guns and requests the pistols should be paid for by the government as they have been used by them. Thompson goes on to state that the man who ordered the guns was an 'unconditional Union man' and member of the Home Guards. Thompson goes on to say that his object in sending these pistols was 'to supply my Union friends and a the same time make a profit for my trouble.' He says also that he has never traded in contraband goods of any kind. The U.S. District Attorney of Indiana writes that the government should pay for the pistols seized as he is well satisfied they were not intended for Rebel use. Governor Morton lists the guns received and says they were seized on orders of Secy. Chase and placed in the hands of cavalry companies now in U.S. service Some good content. Fine.
