Diary of James W. Johnson, was mustered into "C" Co. PA 29th Infantry, on July 28,1861. Diary covers May 8, 1863 through August 2, 1864, 3-1/4” x 5-3/4,” 120pp., tightly written. Gettysburgh is reported in 9 pages, in part, “July 1st; ... about 2pm our cavalry brought in about 300 prisoners captured at Gettysburgh .. our men were repulsed and the enemy occupied the town capturing many prisoners .. Gen. Reynolds was killed in the beginning of the action. July 2nd; “ .. the roar of the artillery was terrible .. at one time the case looked doubtful for our side as the enemy in overwhelming numbers had succeeded but the timely arrival of the 5th & 6th Corp .. turned the partial success of the enemy into a complete rout. July 3rd; “ .. the fight commenced early by the enemy advancing to charge our position .. and after 6 hours of the hardest fighting of the war they were driven in confusion and disorder and left the field. Their sharpshooters were very annoying but were soon got rid of. About midnight they again attempted a surprise but were surprised themselves and fairly massacred by the continous fire poured in on them. So great was their surprise and fright .. that they fairly cried murder. July 3rd; “ .. about 11 o’clock Gen. Slocum rode along the lines and as soon as our boys got glimpse of him they 3 of the heartiest cheers I ever heard.” Then begins the Atlanta campaign, October 29th; in part, “ ..they oppened on us from Lookout Mountain with 2 or 3 batteries .. the troops that attacked us were principly South Carolinians and belonged to Longstreet .. they amused themselves in shelling us until dark ..” November 28, 1863; in part “.. the division moved on toward Lookot mountain .. and after a brisk fight drove them off this side of the mountain.” November 29; in part “.. Fighting began early on Mission Ridge and lasted till near 4 o’clock when the enemy was routed and forced to retreat in confusion, we have captured a great many prisoners ..” June 13th, in part “ ..Can see the enemy’s camp plainly but he shows no disposition to fight.” June 14th, “Opened with artillery on the enemy and it is reported killed Gen. Polk.” June 15th, in part, “ .. we came up to his works, they opened on us with infantry and artillery and killed and wounded 42 of our regiment ..” June 24th, “The body of Maj. Gen McPhearson arrived in the morning and at noon departed for the North.”
