War-date Manuscript Document Signed, “CWH Day Capt. Co. C 3rd R.I.A.”; “Geo. O. Eddy 1st Lieut 3d RIA”; and “D.B. Churchill 1st Lieut. Co. K 3d RI”, 2p. quarto, November, 1862, Camp Stephen, Hilton Head, recording Special Orders No. 49 requiring Day, Eddy, and Churchill to “examine into and report upon some clothing, camp and garrison equipage said to have been lost, for which the said Major Horatio Rogers Jr. is responosible...” of which they report back that “July 29th, last the Company (H, 3d R.I. Arty) of which Major (then Capt. ) Rogers had command moved to Fort Welles, S.C.; early in August the Fort was hastily strengthened, an attack being daily expected from an Iron Clad, & the camp being within the Fort was much broken up & large details from the Regts. were worked there at fatigue day & night, occasioning much confusion. The box in which the above articles were together with much other clothing in the charge of the 1st Sergt. was broken open & when the account was taken the above articles were missing, supposed to be stolen. The Board attach no blame to Major Rogers...” VG.
