War-date Autograph Letter Signed, “C McDonnell Capt & AA General” 1p. octavo, Hd. Quarters, 1st Brigade, 5th Division, Memphis, Tennessee, August 27, 1862, addressed to Colonel T. Kilby Smith, who later made general, and reads “One of your Lieuts has just brought to these Hd. Qurs. a Mr. Elliott, charged by you of violating orders, by discharging firearms near the picket lines. Upon examination I find that he was totally ignorant of violating any orders when he did so. In the absence of Genl. Smith I have taken the responsibility of releasing him upon a promise from him to ‘sin no more.’ ...” VG.
