War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed, "William H. Broughton" (1846-1882) Sgt. Co. D, 16th Maine Vols., POW Weldon Railroad, 3p. octavo, pencil, Augusta, Maine, June 21, 1862, and reads in part: "...we marched up to the State House and halted, the officers (including myself) went in to the State House to see where they were going to quarter us...we marched the men into the Capital grounds where the barracks were...The authorities here had not done a thing towards receiving us and the rations last night were rice moldy bread and coffee...".
