War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed, "William H. Broughton" (1846-1882) Sgt. Co. D, 16th Maine Vols., POW Weldon Railroad, 3p. octavo, ink, Camp Jameson, July 29, 1862, and reads in part: "...Lieut. Merrill is not going, he says he wrote to Capt. Wentworth this morning naming three persons for his position, the names of the persons he recommended are, Sergeant Warren, the present sergeant of the Gorham Company a man by the name of Winship and myself…in my opinion a commission in the Regiment at $200.00 is cheap, for I know any quantity of recruiting officers that it will cost $400.00 or $500.00...".
