A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles E. Leland, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Camp Jackson, Williamsport, Md., Feb. 5, 1862, reads, in part: "...On Sunday thirty of Co. B were ordered to take Capt. Kennedy's place and do picket duty on the river...We are quartered in the same building with the rest of the town guard. Co. B is cut up now. Part of it being a camp and part grading the town and the rest on river duty...I have not tasted of any liquor since I came out here and will not, I have seen too much the effects of it and it makes me disgusted...I have got a nigger who does my washing for me and I pay him so much for shirt pants &c...". The original transmittal cover, missing the stamp, is included. Charles E. Leland was sixteen when he enlisted in Co. B, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861. For nearly a year and half, he served faithfully. Then, during the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot in the lower abdomen and killed on July 1, 1863. VG
