War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written in pencil by Pvt. Charles E. Leland, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Williamsport, Md., Feb. 24, 1862, reads, in part: "...our regiment is going away. I presume over into Va. The Lieut says that we have got a long march before us and hard fighting...we are all under light marching order that is only one change of clothes in knapsacks...The 13th Indiana is going with us and we all have forty rounds of cartridges. There has news come that our forces are crossing at Harpers Ferry tonight... ". Charles E. Leland was sixteen when he enlisted in Co. B, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861. For nearly a year and half, he served faithfully. Then, during the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot in the lower abdomen and killed on July 1, 1863. VG
