A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written in pencil by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Tybee Island, Ga., Mar. 30, 1862, reading, in part: "...As for sending my nephew Charlie a contraband, I had rather not for I dont want to see one of the little cusses around when I come home. I wish every darkie in the United States was in Mother Dies house when it blows over. The boys here think that we shall be home by the 4 of July and some of them have be largely on it. What do the folks up north think?...". Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. VG.
