Group of six (6) letters penned by William E. Cobbett who had service in the 4th and 29th Massachusetts Infantry, they read in small part: ‘...[11/11/62] I have got my old cough again as bad as ever and my legs have been so lame that I can’t walk but a little...I had heard of George’s death but did not know what day he died. There is a nurse here from Craney Island he says he died easy but did not have his senses for a number of days. He was very sick with the typhoid fever and dysentery. I tell you I felt very bad when I was sure of his death and it seems now as if he died here to me. I can’t make it seem otherwise....he was nothing but skin and bones when he died so the nurse told me...[9/17/63]We are now on a march for Knoxville, Tennessee. We have been gone from Crab Orchard eight days but have not marched but six days. I stand the marching first rate keeping up with the regiment most of the time except the hottest days...I also sent a soldiers record which you can frame at your leisure. It is a record of our company all that come out with us and also the officers commanding it. Also the regimental officers field & staff, also the battles the regiment had been engaged in. It costs me one dollar and I think it is worth the money...” All are VG.
