BANKS, Nathaniel (1816-1894) The only Union general to defeat "Stonewall" Jackson during the Civil War at the battle of Kernstown, Virginia. Later served six terms in Congress. Partly-printed Document Signed, “N. P. Banks”, 1p. quarto, New Orleans, September 21, 1863, being an appointment of Sergeant Major James M. Blanchard as Captian in the “Twenty-second Regiment of Infantry Corps de Afrique Volunteers...The Commission to remain in force with the pleasure of the President of the United States be made known in this behalf...” Counter signed by Guido Norman Lieber of the Judge Advocate department. Fine. James Blanchard served in the 1st and 8th New Hampshire Infantry, before this commission. he was severly wounded in action at the Battle of Port Hudson.
