Autograph Letter Signed by the 1st Lt. Commanding, 1-1/2p. folio, Leonardstown, Md., November 5, 1863, addressed to Lt. Jno. Mix, 2nd Cavalry, Comdg. Cons. Dist. and reads: “…About 2 PM I received information that a boat was leading at ‘Whites Point’ for the purpose of securing one to Missouri. I immediately sent one Non. Comd: Officer and 4 men with orders to capture it, which they did. The boat I had destroyed immediately sent my wagon down and brought the goods - consisting of 1 barrel Kerosene oil - I bol of Medical stores & instruments, about 40 yards of grey cloth, 4 sacks of salt, & a little sugar. Three men were captured with the boat - one white & 3 free Negroes - all from Missouri. I examined those men yesterday & found that the goods captured were procured from Mr. Sherburne, a store keeper a t Newport, Charles County, Maryland. I at once dispatched 1 sergeant & 4 men to arrest him & bring him to this place also 6 boxes of tobacco - which he received for the goods captured. I am aware that Charles County is outside this District, but thinking that information would reach Sherburne of the capture of the boat & that he might get out of the way. I came to the conclusion that it was for the interest of the service that he should be arrested at once…” Docketed “Hd Qrs Cavly Dst. Lenordstown, Md, Nov. 8th 63. Respectfully forwarded (for his information) to the Prov. Mar. at Point Lookout, the prisoners are also forwarded.” Fine.
