Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, U.S. Hospital Barracks, New Orleans, Louisiana, July 18, 1863, and reads in part: “...I cannot say that I am well...I have had the ague and fever. Day before yesterday I dispersed with bandages to my leg as it was entirely healed and I can now walk nearly as well as before receiving the wound...The nine months men are leaving as fast as possible to go home and I am glad of it as I have heard them talk about nothing else for the past month excepting to hear them say that their time was nearly out...Fourty four men belonging to the 16th N.H. left this hospital yesterday and fifty men belonging to the 15th N.H. left here a few moments ago to go home...Some of these regiments have done all that could be expected and others have not only disgraced themselves but have brought shame upon the state wherein they were organized and the three years men from the same state who have heretofore done their duty and who intend to always do it will have to receive the slurs of their comrades from other states. The 4th Mass. and 22nd Maine will always be pointed at as disgracing themselves upon the field of battle. The former when ordered upon teh field claimed that their time was up and would not move. 100 of the principle mutineers were arrrested and it is said they will be sent to the Tortugas for three years. The remainder of the Regt. promised to do their duty and appeared to feel ashamed of the course they had been led by a few to persue. The latter upon the field were ordered to charge the enemies works but their Colonel said, rather than to lead them through so much danger he would relinquish his command. We cannot blame the men in this case, but he in their presences refused to obey his superiors and therefore Gen. Banks had him dismissed ...and had his pay discontinued from the date of his commission...” About VG.
