Manuscript Document Signed, "William Northridge Col. 59th Regt. N.Y. Vols" 1p. quarto, Headquarters 59th Regiment N.Y. Vols Camp, Near Falmouth, Va., March 11, 1863, and reads: "...This is to certify that the following vacancies occurred in the Regt by resignation of Col. Wm. Lim Tiddel. Colonelcy, Jan 8, 1863 that Lt. Col. Wm. Northridge was promoted to the Comd & has served in that capacity since. Lt. Colonelcy Jan. 8, 1863, by promotion of Lt. Col. Wm. Northridge & that Major Max A. Thoman was promoted to this since Jan 8/63 & has served in that capacity since..." VG...plus; Muster Out Roll of Lieut. Col. William Northridge & Major Max A. Thoman in the 59th Regiment of New York Volunteers commanded by Lieut Colonel William Northridge called into the service of the United States by the President in New York City...on the 24th of July, 1861 to serve three years...." Listed at William Northridge's entry is the comment "Promoted to be Colonel since Wm. L. Tiddall resigned Jan. 8, 1863" and at Max A. Thoman's "Promoted to Lt. Colonel since Wm. Northridge promoted Jan 8, 1863". Signed by Rufus King. Old tape repairs, Good. Lt. Col. Max A. Thoman was WIA at Antietam and fractured his right should after being struck by a shell on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg. He died on July 11, 1863, and was buried on the Schwartz farm. His Gettysburg grave marker is A-70 New York Plot.
