War-date Autograph Letter Signed, “M.W. Leach” 12th Vermont Infantry, 12p. octavo, Camp near Wolf Run Sholes, Virginia, February 15, 1863, and reads in part: “...I was appointed second lieutenant today...all commisions are given by the Governor of the state, therefore in a few days I shall expect to receive my commission. I made a trade with W.C. Landon for his sword & belt dress coat bugle, sash of silk mattress & blankets..I am to give him fifty dollars...Our sutler was robbed last week by a band of guerillas. 3 of them stepped out from the woods near Dumfries & demanded everything. They got 6 watches, 1 pistol about $300 dollars in money & was goig to take the team but one of them being a little cunning took one of the gang out a little ways & told him that he belonged in Alexandria & was mearly drawing the stuff out for the sutler as they ought not to take one of there own Virignia friends & soforth & succeded in getting of with the team. Our Reg. & the 13th has been over the Aquan today & destroyed two forts of the Rebels one was sufficient large to mount 8 cannon...” VG.
