War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by George L. Sherman, Co. E, 13th Wisconsin Regiment, 4p. folio, Huntsville, Alabama, September 11, 1863, with cover, it reads in part: “...we have been on the march ever since the 27 of Aug we started from Ft. Donelson on teh 27 and got to Columbia, Tenn. Sept. 3d layed over 2 days and then started for Larksville...camped on a little stream by a rich planters plantation...we kileld his sheep and pork, beef, and in the morning we started...it was so hot that two men out of our company fell in the ranks, then our surgeon sent tot he Col and ordered a halt. I dont know how many fell in that hours march but there was a great many. One of our men is not expected to live the other one is well enough to walk. That is for a Col. who has not least sympathy for a private soldier hs sits on his horse and doesn’t feel the heat as one in the ranks with a gun and cartridge box and the dust so thick that you couldn’t see the 2nd man from you...camped by Miles Springs, there we couldn’t get any thing only beef for McCooks army had camped there and took every thing. I was on guard that night and had the fun of firing twice at a nigger. He said he didn’t know waht I mean when I halted him, one of the balls went through the crown of his hat...Col. B (he is a coward) sent a man on guard...we started at 2 am and marched very well until sun rise when our advance was fired on but no one hurt we killed one man and one horse. The Rebs retreated this way and fired again about ten and then broke up and got away. We took 2 prisoners this last time but no one hurt....” Fine.
