Autograph Letter Signed, "Luthern Kelly" Co. G, 147th New York Vols, 4p. octavo, Camp near Kelly's Ford, December 22, 1863, and reads in part: "…We live very well at present but the time has been not long since that hog corn was a treat…& the rebs did not mean we should have that. I took a hog & went to an old barn to get some with some other fellows & after I got about half a bushel of ear the rebs let a volley of bullets at us and we scampered like fun but they did not hurt enough of us …We had a hard march from the 26th of Nov. to the fourth of Dec. & we were on the march night and day. Did not get in any general engagement but were exposed as much as if we had been. Our company acted as skirmishers most all the time. We came on the Rebels one Saturday morning while marching as skirmishers through a piece of woods & then came out in an open field or corn stubble & the Rebs were in a piece of woods & behind breastworks. They let us have a volley which made the bullets fly plenty thick enough for comfort and ease. We lay down on our faces & let fly three or four volleys so that stopped the fun for a little while, but the boys keep shooting whenever they could see their heads & so did the rebs…" Fine
