War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed, "William H. Broughton" (1846-1882) 2nd Lt. Co. D, 16th Maine Vols., POW Weldon Railroad, 2p. octavo, ink, Camp near Liberty, Virginia, November 15, 1863, and reads in part: "...Capt [John D.] Conely [POW Weldon RR], Adjt [Emilus] Small and the four men arrived here the 12th. I received the cigars all right. They brought the colors on with them...[future bvt. Lt. Col. Lincoln K.] Lieut. Plummer [POW May 15, 1864] has been with the Co. since the 1st of Sept. he will probably be promoted to Capt. before long and myself to 2d Lieut...". During the first day at Gettysburg the 16th Maine was surrounded and many of her men, along with the regimental flag, were captured. In order to save the flag from falling into rebel hands, the beleaguered men torn the emblem into small pieces so that each man could carry these sacred relics through confinement. VG.
