A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Camp Palmer, Beaufort, S. C., Jan. 3, 1863, reading, in part: "...We have been out on picket for the last ten or 12 days. We could see the rebel picket and talk with them, you think we need more force here, do you. We don't need any more as long as we lay still, but shall need more if we move - we can hold our own where we are. I should like to see the 20th though. I guess I should know some of them...". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. VG
