War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Morris Island, Oct. 15, 1863 concerning Union war activity on Morris Island in August 1863, reading, in part: "…There is a report around that we are going to St. Helena's Island to drill. I hope not though, for I want to help bombard Sullivan's and James' islands…We are doing picket and fatigue. On picket every third day and on fatigue every 3 days…". Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864.
