War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edward F. Whittermore, Co. H, 32nd Mass. Vols., Camp near Fredericksburg, [Va.,] Feb. 8, 1863 concerning the last words of a dying comrade, reading in part: "…I am not every well at the present time but I am not in the Hospital. I remain in my Quarters…I have not done any duty since the battle. I am in hopes I shall get my discharge…our Lieutenant is working for me as hard as he can. He is a noble fellow I tell you…you wanted to know if Mr. [Feridnand] Champion said anything about dying. I did not hear him say anything about anything when he died [of disease on Jan. 5, 1863]. He told me about three days before he died that he was going to have his discharge and he would tell my folks all about me, he died very easy…". Whittemore served throughout the war and fought at the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania where he was severally wounded in the right arm, losing the limb by amputation.
