War-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. Jordan C. Harriss, Co. A, 81st Illinois Vols., 3p. octavo, Camp Humboldt, Tennessee, October 10, 1862, in part: "…we started on Jackson but some few prisoners of Union men they tell me were taken here night before last & they are expecting an attack here so we encamped here. This is a very nice place. We were roused up 3 times last night. We were drawn up in line of battle at 3 o'clock and stood ready for an assault till day this morning. We are situated at the crossing of the Columbus & Corinth and Memphis & Nashville rail roads 12 miles from Jackson. Col. Dollins [KIA 5/22/63 Vicksburg] was continually receiving dispatches from Gen. Logan that the enemy in strong force were in less than ten miles from this place & supposed to be advancing upon us. He said that Logan was greatly alarmed. There is 1 company of artillery here & 400 or 500 cavalry. You may think there were some scared boys here last night but I don't think there were many. I can speak for myself I was not the least excited. The boys stepped up into line as calm as if they were just going out on dress parade…" VG. Harriss was captured with a majority of his regiment at Guntown, Miss. on June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison. After his exchange, he was mustered out with his regiment at the end of the war.
