A good war-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. Jordan C. Harriss, Co. A, 81st Illinois Vols., 4p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, March 7, 1864, and reads in part: "…The troops of our Corps have returned & it was a shocking spectacle to see the suffering appearance of the thousands of Negro women & children that were brought in….The citizens are going to have a Union meeting here before long. I did not think that they were in earnest in calling you a Copperhead but I was tickled the way Jane wrote after I had written about the Ladies League & I heartily endorsed it. She wrote Hurrah for the Union League & Union soldiers & everything that is for the Union…" VG. Harriss was captured with a majority of his regiment at Guntown, Miss. on June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison. After his exchange, he was mustered out with his regiment at the end of the war.
