Office Commissioner for Exchange, Fort Monroe, August 1, 1864, and reads in part: “...John Stubbs arrived here yesterday from teh front he is discharged and will start for home tomorrow. John leaves the army with the character of a true and brave soldier recorded on his discharge; one which no true patriot need ever be ashamed of, and which will ever be a credit to himself and his country. Frank was here yesterday with a squad of his men, the men were paid off and started for home this evening...we have been in the Fort here for about six weeks, our boat has been in Philada. undergoing repairs. We expect her back today or tomorrow then we will resume our regular trips through to ‘Dixie’...” Fine....plus; Autograph Letter Signed, “S.B. Russell” 1p. quarto, Office Commissary General of Substance, Washington City, November 1, 1864, with cover addressed to Lewis Kirk of Kirk’s Mills, asking to be sent more butter. Fine.
