Autograph Letter Signed, “D. Jewett” Sgt. 13th Maine Infantry, 4p. folio, Morganza Landing, June 3, 1864, with good content it reads in part: “...About 7 pm while marching quietly along through the woods a volley was poured into us, killing one Captain and wounding 3 or 4 privates. This was the first fire, and not long after we got another and then the Rebels paid dear for it. Hundreds of bullets whistling about the ears, and, as we learned the next day, killing 3 and 18 wounded. It was a terrible volley, and I hope it will teach them a lesson. It seems they did not intend to fire upon the infantry but on the artillery for the mistake they paid a dear price. I happened to be a little behind whn first fired upon and a little ahead at the second fire, so we escaped unharmed. It is surprising how reckless the Rebs have been. They make very bold attempts now. Half an hour ago we were ordered to put on equipment, and I expected every minute we should have to fall in and march off on some Tom Fool’s errand. Thank kind fortune, the danger is past for the present...as near as I can learn, our cavalry picket was drove in but were so scared, one Reb would seem a host to them. Please remember we went to bed after a most fatiguing march as we had to march through the woods acting as flankers, and it was so dark, we could not see the man in front of us at times, stumbling over stumps and bushes. You can imagine it was very hard work....toward the Atchafalaya River...There was a saw mill, which had done the Rebs good service, and our object was to destroy it. After firing a number of shots at it, they finally plugged the boiler and then the object of the expedition was said to be accomplished...” Fine.
