Autograph Letter Signed, "H.H. Epps" Captain, 89th New York Infantry, POW at Chaffin's Farm, 4p. octavo, Chesapeake Hospital, June 28, 1864, and reads: "...I am getting so that I can walk around pretty well...I shall try and get my discharge...I might as well be shot as have to lay here and die. I think I can stand it with the Regt. if they don't have much marching to do. You want to know if my sickness comes from my wound. I don't think it does. Although my wound pains me at times and causes a great deal of headache. I think I shall be alright again...Sergt. Dixon and Ferbig, John Thompson are all here wounded also. Wm. Stott and F. Fampson from our Co. ,all slight but F. Fampson, his is through the left, and very bad. Ferbig was struck in the mouth and broke his jaw bone, but is not dangerous. Col. England was killed by being careless.. He exposed himself uselessly and was shot by a sharpshooter. I understand our loss has been about one hundred and fifty and we have not more than that number left..." Fine.
