Draft of a Battle Report for the Red River Expedition, 4p. quarto, Head Quarters Div. 17th Army Corps Red River Expedition, March 16, 1864, and reads in part: “...Agreeably to your request I have the honor to transmit unofficially this statement of progress...Gen. A.J. Smiths command in the Red River Expedition...The fleet of transports sailed from Vicksburg...Thursday 10th inst...on the 14th inst marched 28 1/2 miles built a substantial bridge of sixty feet in length...& took a fort...But one Brigade was actualy engaged. Their casualties were 2 killed, 32 wounded....My command is in occupation of the Fort & wil lbe engaged today & tomorrow in the demolition of teh casemates, bridges...” VG.
