A great war-date printed 4to., comical Northern song captured by Sgt. Nicholas P. Cook, 74th Indiana while he was part of Sherman's march through the Carolinas, entitled: "SHOULDER-STRAPS, A New, Original, Comic and Sentimental Song by the Very Popular Author of 'Rebel John,' Our Flag,' 'Siege of Vicksburg', reading, in part: "I volunteered a year ago…to give secesh a fatal blow. If not to clear upset her…Nancy Jane, my courage did admire; for all the while she hoped that I would rise a little higher…I took the stump…and made my Union speeches…got a host of volunteers…I had a promise of a strap…but learned the man who promised it was nothing but a liar…he strutted 'round and drank his beer…with shoulder straps upon his coat…and when election day arrived…a novice got the shoulder straps…like Lords they live on Uncle Sam. Oh, what a lot of sinners!…". Inscribed in period ink at the bottom of the song sheet, in full: "Jan. the 18th 1865 Savannah, Ga. Segt. N. P. Cook." Cook enlisted in lid 1862 as a private in the 74th and served faithfully during the battle of Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. Usual wear, else fine.
