Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm M. Conner 1st Lt. Battery 'B' 1st Ind. Siege Arty" also served with the 54th Indiana Infantry, 4p. quarto, Fort Williams, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 30, 1864, , it reads in part: "…On my arrival here today I received a communication which bears your signature, also my ring, photograph, letter, and a note from your Daughter announcing the breaking off the engagement which has existed between us for some time. The communication which bears your signature is written in such a tone, and from the general appearance I am almost led to doubt your having been the author as the manner and spirit in which I am addressed by the writer, does not certainly bear the stamp of a true Gentleman which I have always considered you to be. Yet as no other person I suppose would be enough interested nor had any person any knowledge of the affair….In the first place you say you are sorry for what I have done and that if I had any idea of engaging myself to your Daughter whom you call a child why did I not make my intention known to yourself and Mrs. Abrams. It was my first intention to do so but for reasons which I do not feel inclined to give I changed my mind and with the consent of Alice I concluded to leave it a secret to you until after my departure when she was to and did acquaint you with the whole thing…" Much more including the threat of "cutting off Alice without a cent in case she still persists in marrying me…" Fine. Very unusual.
