A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. folio, written in ink by Pvt. John W. Boston, Co. G, 81st Ohio Vols, Savannah, Ga., Dec. 20, 1864. In part: "...we captured Savannah with out hardly a struggle all the men that we have lost is one man out of our Regiment, he being wounded by a piece of shell...I think we may stay here a month...some say that our Division is a going to see the garrison duty at this place...I would rather do garrison duty…than here there was any amount of women & children in Savannah. I was to church 2 times yesterday in town and there was any amount of ladies in the church, the citizens that remain are principally of foreign birth being Irish, Dutch and French and they appear to be glad of our coming to town. They are all of the persons that fed our prisoners that were here...there is quite a number of churches but the principal denomination is Catholic. There are some fine parts in Savannah and it is an old Spanish town of considerable size...". Boston enlisted, at age 29, in late summer 1862 and fought at the battles of Corinth, Atlanta and Bentonville, N. C. He lived to 1918 dying in August of that year. VG.
