A nice war-date Union sailor's letter written by Ordinary Seaman Jim Gifford of New Bedford, Massachusetts, with cover addressed to his parents, 3p. octavo, U.S. Bark Release Off Beaufort, N.C., March 15, 1864, and reads in part: "…I have been quite busy this week as the Str. Newbern came in and I have all the fresh provisions to look out for. I am glad she comes only once a month for while fresh meat last I have to turn out early mornings to serve out meat for breakfast…I don't know what to make of the box of things you sent… You ask me if I get all the papers. I do not missing any…we had seven English prisoners (officers) captured in prize steamer Don. I liked them very well. They eat in the ward room with us. I managed to get a dollar in specie of them…" VG.
