A nice war-date Union sailor's letter written by Ordinary Seaman Jim Gifford of New Bedford, Massachusetts, with cover addressed to his parents, 2p. octavo, U.S. Ship Release, Off Beaufort N.C., April 10, 1864, and reads in part: "…I have been up to Newbern…I had two pictures taken…They are making great preparations around Newbern for another attack and all the way from Morehead to Newbern they are throwing up fortifications. They are expecting the rebs every day in Newbern…I attended church in Beaufort in the forenoon. The old doctor is about as usual, and the masters mate plaques him almost to death. I tell you what he makes me laugh at the expence of the doctor once in a while…I have known the old doc to give the men pills for sore fingers. The sailors make fun with the old doctor. I am sure he is a monomaniac on the subject of liquor. He has been reported for insulting the men on that same subject. There was one prize came in yesterday loaded with cotton…" VG…plus; additional letter pertaining to ordering clothes and etc from his parents. VG. (3 items)
