Partly-printed Document Signed, “E.O. C. Ord” Major General Commanding, 1p. large folio, March 3, 1865, being a commission for Joseph Mark Califf as 1st Lieutenant “ of Seventh Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops...” on rare “United States of America. Head Quarters Department of Virignia. Provisional Commission” form. On the verso of this form is the “oath” which is signed by Califf “In the Field, Va. March 11, 1865”. Rare to have a commission with its oath. Some fold splits, else about VG. ORD, Edward Otho Cresap (1818-1893) was the commanding general of the U.S. Army of the James in 1865.
