War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed, “O.R. U.S. Genl. Hospital Dis. 1, Section 2 Ward 12, Annapollis, Md., 3p. octavo, February 24, 1865, and reads in part: “...Mr. Downing stopped at N.Y. tuesday mornign and I came on to Camp Parole that might get there about 9 oclock. I could not find any of the Boys that night but next morning I found Dickinson and Bill Williams and several others of my Regiment. On reporting at Hd. Qrs. they would not recieve my ‘furlough’ for it was given at the ‘Hospital’ so I took the train and came down here and reported the Surgeon told me that my ‘Certificate’ was good for nothing & that I would lose the computation on my ‘furlough’ which would amount to $7.50 and would not get mustered next muster day, but taht will all come out right in the end and I shall live just as long asthough I had come back 2 weeks before my time was out. There has been 4 boat loads of Prisoners in since I came here, the Steamer Geo. Leary came in yesterday morning with a load of Officers from ‘Richmond’ I saw no one that I knew. They are expecting more in soon. A Lieut from the 4th Regiment was just in to see me, he said that Lieut Mathews [Asa Matthews POW at Weldon Railroad Confined at Macon, Georgia and Columbia, South Carolina] of my ‘Company’ took care of him in Prison when he had the Yellow-fever, he said they would not admit him to the hospital, and had it not been for Mathews he would not have been livig now. Sergeant Dickinson, Chase and Brush, are all going to get ‘Commissions’ Chase [Oren G. Chase POW Weldon RR] and Brush [Charles Brush POW Weldon RR] are in great fret to get mustered, if they get mustered sxi months before their original term of service expires they can be mustered out with the regiment if not they are in for three years from date of ‘Commission’ Dickinson thinks I am all right, but I don’t know whether I shall be or not for my Officers of the ‘Company’ are all gone and there is no one to help me...” VG.
