Autgraph Letter Signed “Henry M. Bowden for Rebecca B. Tunis” 2p. folio, Norfolk, Virginia, July 28, 1865, addrssed to Brvt. General Mann, and reads in part: “... I would respectfully call your attention to the fact that in May 1862 when the United States forces took possession of this City; the warehouse on Tunis’ wharf belonging solely to Mrs. Rebecca B. Tunis was rented by the Government officials as a Commissary Store, with the understanding that she was to receive the usual rent for it; they subsequently took possession of the wharf sheds and lumber yard adjoining the warehouse. She was paid rent up to 1st of July, 1862, but from that time up to December 1863 on account of Capt. Ludlow who was the Quarter Master never having funds to pay undoubted loyal owners...when Genl. Shipley came in command, after much trouble on my part, I received for her, from the Quartermaster a certificate for rent from the time she had taken the oath prescribed by Genl. Butler, at the rates oof only one hundred dollars per month for property for which she had been receiving over two hundred, and which property she has now leased at two hundred and fifty...” It goes on to say she was always loyal and did not assist the rebellion in any way.
