ALLEN, Robert (1811-1886) was a career officer in the United States Army, serving as a brigadier general during the American Civil War.Autograph Letter Signed, by General Robert Allen, 2p. octavo, on “Office of the Chief Quartermaster” lettersheet, Louisiville, Kentucky, December 27, 1865, with cover addressed to Colonel J.F. Rusling, and reads in part: “..I concsidered since they had given Kilpatrick a mission that they should certainly provide for you. I have no doubt that your services were quite as effective as the doubty general; but you see he out ranked you - He had a bigger title; he could boast of cavalry raidds of ‘Many accidents by flood and field’ while you were clerk to a Quarter Master, with the title of captain. It is true you became a colonel, but then you had not been a fighting man - You were not a bold dragoon; ...He had not only slain his thousands by his sword, but his lives of thousands by his jaw bone...” About VG.
