War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed, "William H. Broughton" (1846-1882) Capt. Co. D, 16th Maine Vols., POW Weldon Railroad, 3p. octavo, ink, Camp 16 Maine Vols., January 17, 1865, and reads in part: "...Capt. Plummer returned from furlough night before last, he did not get time to call. I see they are going to raise several companies for home defense to be United States troops, I should like such a chance, but suppose they will give it to some one that never smelt gunpowder...You probably have seen Ben. Butler's farewell address to his comrades, the Army of the James. Do you notice how adroitly he draws the sympathies of his men, truly he is one of those who is mightier with the pen than sword. It is a pity that the Wilmington expedition could not have got off before I think it would have been an uneasy matter to have captured it from Dec. 10th to the 20th for all reports agree in saying that Bragg had sent every available man to operate against Sherman..."
