Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4tp., written in pencil by Pvt. John W. Boston, Co. G, 81st Ohio Vols, Washington, June 26, 1865. In small part: "...I have an excuse for not writing to you often fro I have been on a long and orderous campaign, cut off from all communication...the war is over and we are in God's country once more and expect to be at home in a few weeks at the farthest...we were reviewed and got a great applause by the people of Washington. They gave Sherman's men great praise and thrown open the Capitol and all of the other public buildings of the city to us until the 30th of this month and take great pains to show us everything...". Boston enlisted, at age 29, in late summer 1862 and fought at the battles of Corinth, Atlanta and Bentonville, N. C. He lived to 1918 dying in August of that year. VG.
