A rare war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written in red ink by Corp. Stickney S. Gale, Co. K, 4th New Hampshire Vols., [U. S. General Hospital], February 15, 1865, Chester, N. H., Gale was captured on May 16, 1864 at the battle Drewry's Bluff, Va. He was sent to Andersonville and in July he is shown as being one of the signers of a Union prisoner petition sent to the Confederate government at Richmond pleading them to ease the over crowded and poor living conditions at Andersonville. After being paroled from captivity, he writes, in part: "...I have Doctor Eastman of Hampstead to see me and he gives me medicine that is helping me. I am not so much swollen up now but hope soon to gain some strength...the shirt I have from the Government are quite short for when I go to bed I have to be in a hurry on account of their shortness…I think Floyd is failing some he does not look so healthy as he did when he came from Salisbury [Prison]...".
