FIEDLER, Arthur (1894-1979) was the long-time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, a symphony orchestra that specializes in popular and light classical music. With a combination of musicianship and showmanship, he made the Pops one of the best-known orchestras in the country. Some criticized him for watering down music, particularly when adapting popular songs or edited portions of the classical repertoire, but Fiedler deliberately kept performances informal, light, and often self-mocking to attract more listeners. Typed Letter Signed, “Arthur Fiedler” 1p. quarto, on his personal “Boston Pops” stationary, with matching cover addressed to Pierre Mayer of Brookline, Massachusetts, May 26, 1961, and reads in part: “...Thank you very much for your little note. We miss you here very much. I hope that all is going well with you. I was very distressed to hear that you have to undergo surgery once more. You came out of your last ‘battle’ with flying colors and I am sure you will do likewise again. You know you and I are still from the ‘old school’ and it seems taht we can ‘take it.’...” Fine.
